When Harvey's Truck
Tire Center in Ontario Canada processed tires for "Off the
Road" purposes, they really meant "Off the Road".
In fact, the tires are closer to being "OTW” (on the
water) than "OTR".
At a dry-dock, filled tires are being used
as positioners for the massive ships as they enter the lock. The
tires are mounted both within the concrete structure of the lock
and on portable steel structures which hang on the side of the
lock. These tires are mounted sideways and roll as the ship hits
them when it enters the lock. The decision to fill the tires was
made because of the impracticality of air. When the ships hit the
air filled tires they would immediately deflate, thereby negating
the tires effect in the positioning of the ship. Also, severe damage
would be done to the wheels and wheel parts.
As you can see, these tires are not small.
